A Certain Shade of Blue

Just a little something something from recent RP. Enjoy ^^

A Certain Shade of Blue

Salirien rammed her shoulder into Calisar, forcing her back. Ravencrest was a formidable foe, and her skills with the staff far outshone those of Salirien. Still, they had been rather equal in the fight so far, and there was still hope. One thing was undeniable, however. Relinquishing the Shadow had made Calisar no less dangerous than before. In fact, she might have become more dangerous than ever.

Salirien skipped back, bring her staff around to maintain the assault, her breath heavy. Pearls of sweat formed on her brow, for the first time in a very long time. Then again, it had been a long time since she had stood toe to toe with Calisar.

Bringing her staff into a wide sweep, Salirien barely quelled a gasp, realising that Calisar had not only recovered from the blow, but was now making a counter attack. Their staves met with a sharp snap, Salirien’s weapon of brightly bleached birch, contrasting Calisar’s darker preference. Some things never change… Salirien would probably have smirked in amusement if she weren’t under pressure.

Calisar was quick, bringing her weapon into sweeps and jabs, constantly forcing Salirien to dodge and parry. There had been few openings for Salirien to riposte or even keep pressure on Calisar, though she was certain The Raven would have a few bruises to remember her by.

Their weapons locked as they both attempted to push the other back, but Calisar had become strong. Perhaps it was her days in the wild, or perhaps it was Salirien’s own reliance on divine power, but Calisar forced Salirien back, sending her staggering backwards across the training field.

Whether it was by accident, habit or provocation, Salirien flared the power of the Goddess within her own being. Her body became agile, strong and, in all senses of the word, better. She regained her balance, and realising what she had done, let the power go. It would do little good to practice with Calisar if Salirien continued to fall back on Elune’s grace. More bothering than that, Salirien realised that she had cheated in the battle between them. Shame replaced the Mother’s light, but Salirien was no less determined. She raised her staff to halt Calisar’s incoming blow, making it just in time.

When did Paelar arrive? The Vindicator was watching them spar, his hulking, blue form a stark contrast to his generous and pleasant nature. Or perhaps he could be so generous and gentle because of his stout corpulence? Was it not so, that those of great strength would seek to protect and guide those without it? It certainly seemed the case here… but then again, Azshara had been strong in her own right, as well. Perhaps it boiled down to the complex ambiguity of a person’s-

Salirien clenched her jaw. Not the best time for philosophy, Salirien.

Calisar hefted her staff high, leaving herself open. Salirien rushed forward, pounding the heel of her palm into her opponent’s gut, trying to restore some balance to the fight. Maintaining pressure, Salirien raged onward, striking out with a powerful sweep, leaning her entire being into the strike.

And Calisar blocked.

Salirien blinked, but Calisar did not look even mildly surprised. She looked—as she tended to—like she wanted to put Salirien in a stockade. A stockade that was on fire.

Calisar’s counterstrike was swift, graceful, and effective. There was a wildness to her. It sent Salirien staggering backwards again. She refused the Light of the Goddess, attempting to regain her footing amidst the roots and fallen leaves. Calisar dashed forward, staff spinning in anticipation, eyes betraying a certain ferocity. I have been mistaken. This is a Raven no longer. This is a Stormcrow.

Salirien’s right leg stung sharply, and she found herself flat on the ground, her feet swept from under her. She groaned, reaching for her staff, which had flown from her hands, landing but a few feet away from the Vindicator. A gentle nudge against the side of her neck brought her attention back to her opponent.

Calisar loomed menacingly over her, like she had done in so many of Salirien’s dreams. “Had enough?” She seemed pleased, in spite of her sombre nature.

Salirien inclined her head, admitting defeat. “You have become strong. I believe I can learn much from you, Calisar.” It was no lie, Calisar was strong, and with a staff she was superior. Salirien noted—perhaps more annoyingly than her defeat—that her pearl coloured vest and trousers were thoroughly dirtied from her fall.

“Perhaps you should compete with the javelin next time?” Paelar approached with Salirien’s staff in his hand, smiling. Salirien smiled. Her staff had flown quite far. But she stood, taking her staff, and let the Light of Elune cascade within her body. This time, it was much welcomed, taking away her fatigue. Purposefully, she left the bruises. They would be her reminders to do better next time. She stood straight again, but was uncertain if Calisar would accept the gift of healing. Perhaps this was not the time to ask.

Before too much time had passed, Salirien found herself back in her apartments on the lake. She had drawn herself a bath, soaking to rid herself of the soreness in her skin and muscles. The balcony doors she had left open, glancing out on the lake and the distant trees. Despite her defeat, Salirien was in a good mood. In fact, she realised, she was joyous.

Perhaps it was too early to jubilate, but so far, Calisar had not disappointed. True, Salirien had not managed to offer much of a threat to Ravencrest, but even so, Calisar had not fallen back on Shadow magic to defend herself. If nothing else, it meant that Calisar was indeed trying. There was a force in her so strong that it repelled the Shadow. That made Salirien smile.

She looked at the large, horrible bruise on her upper arm, spreading in a myriad of violets, purples and blues. It stung, but she would shoulder the pain. For more than the pain, it filled her with hope of Calisar’s redemption. It would fade in time, but the bruise was a kindly reminder. Besides, Salirien had always found there to be a delicate beauty in a certain shade of blue.

Sooooo are we all allowed to start beating up on Sali now then
One man scorned and covered with scars still strove with his last ounce of courage to reach the unreachable stars; and the world will be better for this

Loving that last line, Salirien! Pulls it all together wonderfully, and it's a cool glimpse into what's going on with each of them. Wondering if there's something between Sali and Calisar now, though... Sali/Cali?! ...Salcal?

Glad to see Cali is finding her way back from the darkness!
